Get Your Hands Dirty – a free farm-based learning program for York City kids.
York Fresh Food Farms is seeking groups of children to participate in Get Your Hands Dirty on a once-a-week basis (or, with special arrangements, we may be able to do a week long, or 2-week long, program depending on the teachers’ schedules). Please indicate your interest in your group participating on this application: YFFF GYHD Application Form. We will try to be flexible to accommodate your program’s schedule requirements. And please complete a form even if your group may have transportation issues, as York Fresh Food Farms may be able to arrange for transportation for your children.
York Fresh Food Farms is the first and only urban farm in the City of York. York Fresh Food Farms is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that was created to reduce hunger in York County. In 2018, we grew more than 18 tons of vegetables in York City that were distributed to families in need. All York Fresh Food Farms’ crops are sustainably grown using organic methods.
The Get Your Hands Dirty program is a farm-based or experiential learning program for York City kids to have fun outside and experience where food comes from, how to grow vegetables, making healthy food choices, learning about plants, insects, the environment, the weather and fresh food and motivate children to try new foods.
Get Your Hands Dirty will provide approximately 100 City kids with once-a-week farm experiences including: growing plants from seed, vegetable gardening, learning how plants grow, why plants are important, about fruits and vegetables, about worms, about insects/pollinators and making healthy food choices. Two experienced teachers from York’s Edgar Fahs Smith STEAM Academy will lead the program’s lessons, activities, crafts and projects each day. The program will be held behind 1195 Roosevelt Avenue.
Get Your Hands Dirty will be held between 8am and 1pm Monday—Thursday from June 10 to August 9 (we may be able to do Fridays, and these dates are approximate and depend in part on the York City School District academic calendar). In order for the children to connect with the plants growing around them and to experience the farm and different vegetables as they are planted, grown and are harvested through the growing season, Get Your Hands Dirty is optimally a 4–, 6– or 8– session program, with each session being 90 minutes to 2 hours. (We do welcome one-time visits or field trips to the York Fresh Food Farms on a pre-arranged basis.)
